surgical OPTIONS FOR weight loss

America has become more and more aware of the ill effects of obesity, both in adults and increasingly in  children. The proliferation of diets, diet pills, hunger suppressant or "fat burning" nutritional supplements, exercise machines, hypnosis, and similar methods of weight loss has provided the consumer with a large choice of options. The causes of obesity are constantly under investigation and include, heredity predisposition, emotional issues, stress, food addiction, and more. However, many people seeking to reduce weight have not been successful with any of the above mentioned alternatives and would rather take a more definitive approach through surgery, including Bariatric Weight loss or Banding.

When people consider surgery for weight loss it usually is attractive due to the relatively swift results. However, it is important to know that there are post surgery issues that will follow including dietary restrictions and potential cosmetic surgery to deal with residual skin that remains stretched after the surgery in many cases.

While weight loss can be achieved by reducing caloric intake and exercise, this basic alternative may seem easy enough but many people are not predisposed to a low calorie, high exercise routine for a number of reasons including, heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, and physical problems. Therefore, surgery is one option for those who are significantly over weight. Surgery is generally not recommended unless the person is eighty to one-hundred pounds overweight depending on their gender.

There are two types of surgical approaches to weight loss including Bariatric (or stomach bypass, of which there are two procedures) surgery and Laparoscopic Banding (restricting the stomach through banding). It is important to note that surgery is not a panacea and there is a need to adhere to post surgery guidelines in order to avoid complications and ensure good health.

Essentially, surgical procedures for weight loss are designed to limit the amount of food a person can intake comfortably and achieve a feeling of fullness or limit the amount of food being digested. Due to the smaller amount of food than they were accustomed to eating or digesting positive results are achieved relatively quickly.

Given the cost and potential risks associated with surgery, a decision to undergo a surgical procedure to achieve your weight loss goal, whether for personal appearance reasons or for health reasons should be made under the advice of a physician.

Liposuction which is less invasive surgery for removing fat and cellulite is another alternative, but it is still surgery and requires post operative care as well, and a program that will help the person from regaining the weight.

All in all it is advisable to shop around for an experienced well qualified practitioner and ask questions about what the risks are, what is the recovery period, and what post operative plans are recommended.
